In an industry as fickle as the entertainment industry, where gender equality and a level playground for all parties is an alien concept, women have, for many years now, been taken advantage of,lured to shady deals and made to lower their pants just so their status can rise.
It's endemic in Hollywood. And not any better in Kenya too where hundreds of pretty girls, from models to singers to dancers, have had to put up with a pressures and overtures of amorous studio honchos who insist on sleeping with them before they provide professional services to them.
One such girl who was caught up in such a mess was Aryanna, the sensational singer whose new song Sina Shaka is currently shaking Nairobi.
Born Maryann Ng'ang'a,Aryanna had to put up with a randy music producer who pushed her to her limits, daily bugging her for sex if she ever needed her music produced and released.
Aware of how slippery this industry was,and how much she stood to loose if she gave in to this man's wicked plots, Aryanna cut all ties to the producer, severed her platonic relationship with him and walked away... To find a new home, new producer, new chaperone of her sizzling talent.
Aryanna, who started singing some 10 years ago,way before high school, and had to first clear high school before she ever recorded her first single, did her first song Binadamu with the said famous producer who, after she rebuffed him, refused to cooperate with her in promoting the song and spreading it's hype.
Dejected, Aryanna decided to find a job and try to fund her own musical career something and break free from the yokes of these marauding types. Formal employment got so bad, though, that the poor girl even,at some point, forgot all about her musical dreams and gave up on her recording aspirations.
However,Aryanna would still write music at her home and also attend Karaoke nights to hone her skills further.
'But through it all,' Aryanna says,' I had this great guy named Fazo so dear to me and I owe him so much who always insisted and encouraged me...telling me that I had all it took and have a great voice and that I should go back and do what I loved most... '
That way, with the dark memories of her past producer at the back of her head,Aryanna luckily met this new music supremo named Jilly who saw the talent in her... And took her in,like a talented sister, this time. Not some quick meat he'd prey on.
And through the expertise of the brilliant Jilly,Aryanna did Sina Shaka. And also shot it's video... The song,as we speak, has been blowing up YouTube, social media and getting rave reviews by music outlets and blogs.
A story of triumph and victory. Triumph over sexism, angst, disappointments and dejection.
