Tanzania
Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has reiterated that it will
not extend the deadline to switch off all counterfeit mobile phones in
the country.
Speaking
to journalists TCRA director general, Mr Yahya Simba, said although
some people are requesting for an extension the authority will switch
off all fake phones on June 16 this year.
Mr Simba who was speaking to journalists said:
“The directive was issued in December last year so people had over six months to switch to original handsets.”
Counterfeit phones are not tested for compliance like original phones with industry safety standards.
In addition fake phones contain high levels of lead that is dangerous to the environment and to humans.
