Tanzania President sacks 9,932 Govt workers over fake certificates

Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Friday fired 9,932 civil servants who were found using fake educational certificates to work. Magufuli made the announcement on state television after receiving a report on public servants' certificates verification. He said salaries of 9,000 plus employees for this month should be withheld after an investigative task force found that 9,932 government workers presented fake qualifications when they were employed.
The president immediately ordered that the dismissed civil servants would have to defend themselves in court, 'so that they could be jailed for seven years as the law says.'
'They are thieves like any other thieves. You cannot perform if you don’t have deserving qualifications,'
Magufuli said. In a previous report, the Minister of State, Ms. Angela Kairuki, revealed that a total of 435,000 had their certificates verified, which eventually led to forged certificate burst.

Controversial Tanzanian Pastor vows to become a hawker if all journalists who defamed him don’t die by 2017

Controversial Tanzanian pastor Anthony Lusekelo has vowed to resign from his calling and become a hawker if journalists who defamed him do not die by 2017. The preacher, popularly known as Mzee wa Upako, made the declaration on Sunday, December 11th, during a service at his Kanisa la Maombezi Church.
"He said all journalists who reported that he is a drunk and disturbs his neighbours late at night will die before March 2017."
Pastor Lusekelo was reportedly arrested in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, for obstructing his neighbours by packing his car on the road to punish them after they accused him of being drunk and unfit to be a religious leader. After his arrest, the pastor was subjected to an alcohol test which indicated that he was drunk during the confrontation.

This is why President Magufuli is the world’s best president

In August this year, John Pombe Magufuli was announced as the world’s best president by the United Nations Economic and Social Council during their annual review.
A technical committee made up of experts from reputable international civil service organisations and think tanks globally made the finding based on political, social and economic indexes.
“I am very honoured with such a prestigious recognition. I believe this feat has been achieved through hard work and transparency of my government,” Magufuli said upon receiving the award.

The tough talking president who was elected in October last year, has radically transformed Tanzania into a global model for a corrupt-free country following his raft of austerity measures.

Education
His philosophy has been guided by his humble background, transparency and sheer hard work that saw him rise from a school teacher to president.
Magufuli was born in 1959 in Chato District near the shores of Lake Victoria and studied at local schools for his primary and A-levels before joining the University of Dar es Salaam where he earned a B.Sc Ed. (Hons) in Chemistry and Mathematics.
He also has a Masters Degree in Chemistry from both the Universities of Dar es Salaam and Salford in the UK. He currently holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Dar es Salaam.

No-nonsense leader
Magufuli has earned himself a reputation as a no-nonsense leader.
His passion and zeal to end wasteful government spending, curb corruption and improve public service delivery, has endeared him not just with the low income Tanzanians but also many others in the region.

"I'm telling government officers who are lazy and negligent to be prepared: They were tolerated for a long time. This is the end," Magufuli warned during his maiden speech before the Tanzanian parliament.
#WhatWouldMagufuliDo
#WhatWouldMagufuliDo trended for several days on Twitter after President Magufuli cancelled the lavish Independence Day celebrations and mobilized his citizens to do a nationwide clean-up instead.
He then slashed the budget for a state banquet to mark the official opening of parliament in order to cut down on “unnecessary spending”.

In his first days in office, Magufuli made surprise visits to ministries and hospitals, firing the board of the country’s biggest hospital after finding patients sleeping on the floor.
Magufuli slashed the cabinet from 30 to 19 posts, merging some ministries and dispensing with others and banned inessential foreign travel for politicians, and business class flights for all but the most senior figures.
Nicknamed “the Bulldozer”, President Magufuli in January this year banned all senior public officials from using fuel guzzlers and the use of presidential red carpets.

Politics in Tanzania: CUF crisis deepens over Registrar’s directive

Opposition party Civic United Front (CUF) on Saturday rejected a stand by the Registrar of Political Parties, Judge Francis Mutungi for endorsing Prof Ibrahim Lipumba as bona fide national chairman of the party.
In a statement issued shortly after Judge Mutungi issued the directive, CUF deputy secretary general Nassor Ahmed Mazrui said according to the Political Parties Act, No. 5 of 1992, the Registrar has no legal authority to give advice or directives on issues that a political party decides through its legal organs.
“We would like to ask the Registrar of Political Parties to reserve his advice as we don’t need it,” said Mr Mazrui.
Mr Mazrui made the remarks shortly after Judge Mutungi noted in a statement that his office recognises Prof Lipumba as the bona fide CUF national chairman.
The Registrar also reinstated all CUF members who were either suspended or sacked by the party following its aborted national congress in Dar es Salaam.
He said the decision by CUF national council to suspend its members on its August 21 meeting was null and void as the decision did not follow party constitution procedures which, among other things, required a member to be given a chance to defend him or herself before being penalised.
Judge Mutungi also declared that the special committee picked by the party’s national council to lead the party in the interim, was unconstitutional.
While CUF used the Political Parties Act to reject the Registrar verdict, Judge Mutungi also used the same law to authenticate his decision.
Judge Mutungi said the interim committee was unconstitutional as there was no vacant leadership position that was supposed to be filled at the time of their appointment.
In a related development, soon after the Registrar statement, a group of CUF members arrived at the party headquarters in Buguruni waiting for Prof Lipumba to retake his leadership position.
However, they were unable to enter the offices as the gates were locked. Later, after Prof Lipumba arrived, they forced their way into the compound.
Talking to reporters, Prof Lipumba hailed the decision by the Registrar noting that it conformed with CUF’s constitution.
In a statement issued later, Mr Mazrui asked CUF members across the country to remain calm and note that the Registrar has no power to override decisions the party had in connection its former chairman, Prof Lipumba.

Human rights ’watchdog’ blasts CHADEMA, police over standoff

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Nyandugachided CHADEMA leaders over their claims that Tanzania is being run as a dictatorship under President John Magufuli's government, but also faulted the police for making seemingly gung-ho threats against perceived troublemakers.

Police and CHADEMA leaders are currently locked in a potentially explosive standoff over plans by the country's main opposition party to hold nationwide demonstrations and public rallies on September 1, which it has dubbed the 'day of defiance.'

"CHADEMA should change their vocabulary...and remove the word 'dictatorship' from their political statements because Tanzania has democratic institutions and respects the rule of law," Nyanduga said at a meeting to discuss the planned opposition protests.

Hedescribed the fact that CHADEMA has filed a case in the High Court asking the judiciary to set aside a police ban against the demonstrations as an indication that the rule of law and separation of powers are respected in Tanzania.

According to Nyanduga, the commission intends to reconcile CHADEMA and the police to circumvent the possibility of violence breaking out over the disputed protests.

"The commission urges ... both sides to cease the use of language or words that may lead to violence or undermine principles of human rights and good governance," he said.

"We advise the police force not to use words such as 'we will deal with all those who defy our order' because the commission feels that these words may lead to the use of excessive force by the police," he added.

He was careful to avoid taking sides on whether or not the planned demos and rallies should go ahead, emphasising instead on the need for the two sides to avoid the use of confrontational language and rather sit together ata negotiating table.

President Magufuli has on several occasions publicly warned that his government will crack down on political troublemakers "without mercy".

He has won some praise from Western donors for spearheading a sweeping anti-corruption drivein the country since coming to power in November last year.

But he has also been accused of becoming increasingly authoritarian, undermining democracy by curbing political activity, and banning live television coverage of parliamentary sessions.

Nicknamed ‘The Bulldozer’ for the way he pushes through projects, he has been quoted as saying he will not allow anyone to stand in his way and delay his government's development plans for the country.

Police were conspicuous by their absence at yesterday’s meeting convened by CHRAGG, where representatives from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and the Attorney General's chambers were also 'no-shows'.

Nyanduga said he had received apologies from both CCM and the AG’s chambers that the relevant officials would not be present.

He urged CHADEMA to suspend its demonstrations pending the outcome of two separate court cases on the same issue currently proceeding in the country's court system.

The opposition party has filed the cases at the Mwanza division of the High Court and the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), challenging the police ban on its planned demonstrations.

CHRAGGcalled on the judiciary to expedite the hearing of both cases to prevent political tension in the country from building up.
